Pre-launch Check List

Check list for launching a high altitude balloon.

 

Pre-Launch

  Arrange to pick up Helium/Hydrogen from Air Gas at least a week ahead of time.
  Pick up Helium/Hydrogen.
  File HIBAL NOTAM at least 24 hours in advance.
  Notify Hutch Tower (665-6557) 24 hours prior to launch.  (662-4892 and 694-2692 are alternate numbers).
  Pick up Lithium (primary) batteries for any payloads or cameras.  (AA battery for Canon camera, 9V for backup transmitter)
  Weigh capsules and all rigging.  FAA limits payloads to no more than 6 pounds per package, 12 pounds total.
  Install batteries in equipment.
  Charge Lithium batteries.
  Clear off CHDK SD card and install in camera.
  Clear off GoPro MicroSD card and install.
  Attach harmless package notice to capsules.
  Check parachute for damage. 
  Check load lines for damage.
  Check/re-tie weak link if necessary.

 

Launch Day

  Verify all batteries are installed and charged.
  Verify all cameras have CHDK SD Cards installed.
  Turn on cameras, and mount inside of capsules.  Verify CHDK script is started.
  Check primary APRS transmitter for operation, and GPS lock.
  Check backup APRS transmitter for operation, and GPS lock.
  Check backup beacon for operation.
  Fill balloon on top of tarp.  Have compressed gas cylindar laying on ground or mounted in trailer.
  Check all knots in load line.
  Verify parachute shroud lines are untangled, and adjustment is set appropriate.
  Attach balloon.
  Thread lanyards through handling ring, if applicable.
  Enable cut-down device, if applicable.

  Release Balloon
